Post Re: Guide: How to Get YOUR Free Repair
I just called the Executive Offices number, got myself a wonderful case manager who sent me the box for my free repair today. After 5 days of calling and arguing, getting told " sorry it's not under warranty or the service enhancement agreement", I'm getting it fixed. The motherboard AND the hard drive which fried because of the motherboard.

Thank you guys so much for your help, you saved me a lot of money and trouble.

Congratulations! Be sure to put your order number, etc, that you're receiving from HP in the sticky at the top of the forums for "successful service/order numbers for free repairs." This will help give more unfortunate users the opportunity to cite a repaired machine.

Also, be very careful and mindful of the heat/etc. More than likely the machine will be fixed with the same faulty parts.

Just to repeat again what has been discovered with regard to the BBB. They have no teeth to do anything all they do is relay your info (that you have already supplied to HP) on to HP. Even if they could they are not going to slap HP's perverbial hand becuase HP is one of the members that pays them dues.. The place to go with complaints in my oppinion at this point is the Consumer Product Safety Commission.. Point out that the notebooks are hazaradous and capable of inflicting minor burns due to overheating and a possible fire hazard should a combustible item such as correction fluid ( commonly found on and around desks) be spilled near the overheated unit.

I could add another tip for these type of situations.

Let them know you mean business

I didn't use it this time, because my case manager was surprisingly helpful right from the start.

But if you've already had problems and they are just not listening. Right from the start there a couple of tactics you can use to establish you know what HP is doing and your not messing around.

1. Start the conversation off like this. Hi Case Manager Name. Just before we start, by US law I need to notify you that this conversation is being recorded.
And if they ask why. You simply respond that it is simply to have a record of the conversation. They shouldn't have a problem with it, they are taping you, you should be able to tape them.

You don't have to tell them that you are taping the conversation. Acording to the US law, it is required that one person knows that the recording is being done. And you qualify as the one person that knows it's being recorded. Now if you were not part of the conversation because you were tapping into the telephone lines, and recording it, then you would not qualify as one of the people.

:) That's true. But they might not know that. Also there are certain states and circumstances where it is necessary for both parties to know. Atleast that is what i read :)
Quote:
12 states require, under most circumstances, the consent of all parties to a conversation. Those jurisdictions are California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington.

The idea is simply to let them know that you are serious and you know that HP is doing their best to not acknowledge a well known problem. And it makes it 'seem' you could be using this conversation as evidence in a future customer complaint/lawsuit...whatever

Wow that stinks. Since I live in Florida, I checked the law for florida, and people still can record without letting all parties know under cirtain circumstances, but it is so very unclear as to where the line is drawn.

But yea, I understand your point of getting hp's attention.

Hi,

I am a Deputy Sheriff in California, and yes my Tx1320 is an over heating piece of crap. As to the recording of conversations with HP, when you call MOST of the numbers to HP's customer service you will get the famous recording that states, "Your conversation may be recorded for training purposes." This takes away all rights to privacy as it pertains to the conversation. In simple terms, you and they know the conversations is being recorded because of the recording notification, so there should be no legal reason why you could not record the conversation yourself without notifying the HP representative. :D

I think the only reason to tell them that you are recording the call, whether you do so or not, is to make sure they are aware they are not dealing with someone who just fell off the back of the turnip truck. It says to them "I don't trust you" in a sugar coated way. This can have the negative effect of them becoming completely guarded so they will not stray at all from their given script. In this case this may not be something you want to do. Initially I would say it would be better to simply come across as personable, informed and intelligent as opposed to adversarial or threatening. You might be fortunate enough to come across one of the individuals there that are willing to bend a bit. But I am willing to bet that if the conversation starts on an adversarial note that you will get nothing but the pre-canned responses. After all they are human beings and whether we like it or not they are in the position to thumbs down or thumbs up us. Best to let them believe that they are your best buddy rather than put them on the defensive with an attitude of "I'll teach this clown a lesson". Keep in mind that either way it goes it makes no difference to them in the end. They still get the same pay check. So putting them on the defensive just gives them a reason to say "no way" because now it's personal.
